Tonight we took a step back in time and watched The Wizard of Oz on DVD. Bill doesn't remember seeing it since he was a little boy and, after going to 'Wicked' this summer, thought it would be fun to compare story lines. Sure enough, its still a pretty decent flick- especially considering it is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year! I was really surprised it was that old- (that's 10 years older than ME! LOL) I have vivid memories of seeing it when I was a child.. probably 5 or 6. Mom and Grandma took me to a big old fashioned movie house in downtown Albuquerque. Back then going to a movie was quite an event.. The theater was always dimly lighted so an usher in a uniform with a flashlight would guide you to your seat. I remember lots of gilded decorations and huge red velvet curtains that were pulled back when the movie began. Of course there was a newsreel and a cartoon before the movie.. I dimly remember the curtains closing after the cartoon and then slowly opening again when the feature film began. Wow! Talk about your 'ta dah' moment! They knew how to do it back then. And, yeah, the monkeys scared the dickens out of me!! Anyway, fun movie, fun memories.

What a great memory. I think the first exciting movie memory I have is when the papa took us to the drive in to see "Empire Strikes back". I don't think I made it through the whole thing but I remember being thrilled about watching a movie from the car!
ReplyDeleteThat was a fun time- probably the last time we went to one.. even then it was hard to find drive-in movies. We were on vacation in California and were tickled to find one playing a movie we all wanted to see. We went to the store and loaded up on pop and goodies and took off. I'm glad you don't remember that the movie was so dark that we could hardly tell what was going on- We had to go again to an indoor theater when we got home! LOL
