This morning I was just kind of day dreaming and gazing out my window when a quick flash of movement caught my eye. Sure enough it was a little brown lizard scampering up my wall to sun himself on the top. It made me smile. I have to admit I have kind of a soft spot in my heart for these harmless little critters. Shortly after Mom & Dad were married, we lived in one of two small adobe houses out in the middle of the boonies (on the outskirts of Albuquerque, New Mexico). Grandma Reay lived in the other and was our only neighbor for several miles. I remember our front room had little decorative niches in the wall which were perfectly situated to catch the morning sun. However, we were not the only ones who enjoyed the sunshine shining in our window. One morning a small brown lizard appeared, planted himself in one of the niches and proceeded to sun himself till the sun moved. Then he disappeared as quietly and quickly as he came. This became an every day ritual. At first, Dad tried to catch him, but, he was never quite fast enough. That little lizard could move! Once, with a lucky grab he did manage to catch the very tip of his tail but it was a hollow victory. This particular type of lizard has the ability to shed his tail to escape a predator and he did. So Dad ended up with a not so pleasant souvenir and our little visitor was left with a stump of a tail that we observed slowly grew back. Eventually, Dad conceded defeat, and once he and the lizard called a truce, we became accustomed to and actually looked forward to his morning visits. This continued till our new house was completed and we moved into the city. To our surprise, we kind of missed our morning guest- he had become part of our comfortable routine. Anyway, those sunny days of childhood were long ago, but, I still remember our erstwhile friend whenever I see a little brown lizard scurrying along. So, happy travels Little One. On this beautiful spring morning, may you find a safe, warm ledge just right for sunning.
I think it's fun to see the lizards on the wall too! I will never forget Christi's dog, Nutmeg's reaction to them. She wasn't a fan :) I love spring, but I wish it didn't come with allergies. Love your posts, Mom!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great memory. I too love the lizards we see here. Besides eating bugs, we have our own lizard story. When David was about two he saw a 6-8 inch gecko in the laundry room and came out yelling, "A dinosaur, a dinosaur!" We laugh about that at least once a year as we see the geckos coming back.
